I get a lot of questions about this topic, and a lot of confusion surrounds my pricing structure for my pattern sales and my pattern memberships, so I thought I would write a blog post explaining why I do the things I do! Writing patterns is a source of fun, relaxation, and comfort for me. In hard times I always seem to turn back to knitting as a stress reliever. During good times, I always seem to have a new project on my needles. No matter what’s going on, I’m going to be knitting or crocheting anyways.
The Knitty Gritty
Writing patterns takes countless hours of hard work (editing, revising, ripping out stitches in frustration more times than I can count), and thousands of dollars per year in yarn, website hosting fees, photo editing apps, graphic design software, and of course, more yarn. But I love it! In the beginning I only gave away patterns for free and that worked for a while. I started gaining a lot of traffic to my blog, and I started learning about how to make money with my blog. I won’t go into details, but there are a lot of expenses and hours that go into running a knitting blog.
Why Don’t You Just Sell Your Patterns or Offer them for Free? Why do Both?
Some people want printed patterns, some people are ok with looking at them on the computer. It takes a lot of extra work for me to set up digital downloads through my website. So I decided to charge for that service, as a way to support this website, and hopefully help grow this little business so that I can keep doing what I love! If you don’t mind looking at the pattern on the computer or phone- you can have it for free! There will be some patterns I release that will ONLY be available for purchase- but members will still be able to download them at no additional charge, for example, The Cable Crown Headband or The Triangle Stitch Crochet Scarf.
I’ve been a freelance WordPress designer for over 8 years, so I know how to set up an online shop, integrate memberships into my site, and do my own graphic design for my website, so it just made sense that I should try to take this thing to the next level and try to make the thing I love into a real business, while keeping it accessible to my audience. So I wanted to give you as many options as possible. Things may change as I grow and understand more what you want out of this site, and I am always welcoming of feedback and suggestions!
My thinking was, if you were only interested in a free pattern, you could get that by scrolling through my blog and reading it right there on the blog. I’d still make a small commission from the ads that I display there. If you only want to download and print a single pattern, you can purchase it for a small fee, and instantly access it. If you want access to the whole shebang for the price of about 1 pattern- you can have that too with a monthly or yearly membership!
Basically, I’m in the process of testing out what works best for you right now. And I want to hear your feedback, so let me know in the comments! What do you want more of? Less of? What options would you like to see with a membership?
So what’s next for Margo Knits?
I have some really exciting new products coming to the shop soon. I’m in the production process of my own line of knitting needles that are going to be unlike anything you’re able to buy anywhere else. If they work out, I’ll come out with a crochet line too! Margo Knits monthly and yearly members will automatically receive a HUGE discount on these supplies, which is a big incentive to sign up. I am also working on new knitting and crochet kits that will be added to the shop in the next few weeks.
